Expat Explorer 2009

Expat Explorer, now in its second year, surveyed over 3,100 expats from more than 50 countries and is the largest survey of its kind, with 46% more respondents than last year.

Expat Economics is the first of three reports on the results and is a new addition to this year's survey which looks at an expats' economic quality of life. This is determined by four main economic factors:

  • Annual income in excess of US$200,000
  • A monthly disposable income in excess of US$3,000
  • An increase in saving while living/working abroad (in their current country of residence)
  • Having at least two luxury items in the country they live in

Expat Experience is the second of three reports for 2009 and explores expats' lifestyle experiences while they live and work abroad. This is determined by 23 factors, including:

  • Improvement in quality of a number of day to day items including accommodation, food, social life, healthcare, working hours, family life
  • Ease of organising finances
  • Ease of finding accommodation
  • Ability to make friends
  • Ability to integrate with the local community

Offshore Offspring is the third and final report and explores the challenging task of bringing up children whilst experiencing the expat way of life. The report examines six countries from the Expat Explorer research, which were ranked according to a number of factors including:

  • Organising education/schooling
  • Making new friends
  • Experiencing new cultures
  • Creating healthier lifestyles
